Oil Pan Removal and Installation, According to Chilton:

258 Engine.

1.- Turn the steering wheel to full left lock.

2.- Support the engine with a hoist. Raise and support the car at the side sills. Disconnect the engine ground cable.

3.- Unbolt the steering idler arm at the side sill, and the engine cushions at the brackets.

4.- remove the sway bar, if equipped. Remove the front crossmember down. Remove the right engine bracket. Loosen but do not remove the strut rods at the lower control arm.

5.- Drain the engine oil.

6.- Remove the starter.

7.- Remove the oil pan bolts and pan. Remove the front and rear seats, and clean the gasket surface.

8.-Install the new pan front seal to the timing cover, and apply sealer to the tabs. Cement new side gaskets to the block, and apply sealer to the ends of the gasket.

9.- Coat the inside surface of the new rear seal with soap, and apply sealer to the end tabs. Install the seal in the rear main cap.

10.- Coat front and rear seal contact surfaces with engine oil, and install the pan. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal.

Oil Pan Removal and Installation, According to Clymer:

258 Engine.

Removal
1.- Drain the engine oil.

2.- Lock Steering wheel.

3.- Remove the air cleaner assembly.

4.- Install a holding fixture as shown on figure 41.

5.- Raise front of vehicle and place it on jackstands.

6.- Disconnect the front drive shaft.

7.- Remove bolts from engine cushions. Remove bolts from sill-to-crossmember brace bar at crossmember, then move bar out of the way.

8.- Loosen pitman arm at steering gearbox (Figure 42). Loosen idler arm at steering linkage (Figure 43).

9.- Remove steering damper to crossmember bolt. Loosen sway bar bolts and lower sway bar.
10.- Place a jack under the front axel for support.

11.- Disconnect each half shaft at the axel. Push shafts in toward engine and suspend from frame sills with wire to prevent shaft damage.

12.- Disconnect axel assembly at right axel tube, upper end of left axel bracket and pinion end bracket. Lower axel assembly slightly and remove vent hose. Remove axel assembly.

13.- Support crossmember assembly with a jack, remove the attaching nuts and bolts and lower assembly to provide oil pan clearance.

14.- Remove starter motor.

15.- Remove the torque converter inspection shield, if so equipped.

16.- Remove the oil pan bolts, then slide pan to the rear and remove from engine.

Installation:

1.- Install a new front seal to the timing case cover with a generous amount of RTV sealant at the end tabs.

2.- Lightly coat the engine block side rails with gasket sealant and install new oil pan side gaskets to the side rails. Apply a generous amount of RTV sealant at the gasket ends.

3.- Coat the inside curve surface of the new rear seal with liquid soap. Apply RTV sealant to the side gasket surfaces which touch the seal end tabs.

4.- Install the rear seal in the rear main bearing cap recess; make sure it is fully seated.

5.- Wipe the front and rear oil pan flanges with engine oil. Install the oil pan to the block and tighten the ¼ in. attaching bolts to 7 ft.-lb. (9N∙m). Tighten the remaining bolts to 11 ft.-lb. (15N∙m).

6.- Reverse Steps 1-15 of Removal procedure to complete installation. Tighten all fasteners to specifications. Fill the engine with oil. Connect the negative battery cable.
